History Myths of Xmas
In ancient pagan times, the last day of winter in the Northern Hemispere was celebrated as the night that the Great Mother Goddess gives birth to the baby Sun God. It was also called Yule the day a huge log is added to a bonfire, around which everyone would dance and sing to awaken the Sun from it's long winter sleep.
In Roman times it became the celebration honouring Saurnas (the harvest god) and Mithras (ancient god of light), a form of Son worship that had come to Rome from Syria a century before with the cult of Sol Imvictus. It announced that winter is not for ever, that life contnues and an invitation to stay in good spirit. The last day of winter in the northern hemispere occurs between the 20th and 22nd of December. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia between the 17th and 24th of December.
To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan festival, early christians decked their homes with Saturnalia holly. As the number of Christians increased and their customs prevailed, the celebrations took on a Christian observance. But the early church did not celebrate the birth of Christ in December until Telesphorus who was the secon Bishop of Rome declared that Church services should be held during this time to celebrate The Nativity of our Lord and Saviour. However since no one was quite sure in which month Christ was born, Nativity was often held in September. In fact for more than 300 years, people observed the birth of Jesus on various dates.
In 325 AD Constantine the Great the first Christian Roman Emperor, introduced Christmas as an immovable feast on the 25th of December. He also introduced Sunday as a holy day in a new 7 day week. In 354 AD Bishop Liberius ordered his members to celebrate the birth of Jesus on the 25th of December. However in fact Christmas was not a legal holiday until the 1800s.
In 1834 Queen Victoria brought her German husband Prince Albert into Windsor Castle, introducing the tradition of Christmas trees and Carols. In 1836 Alabama became the first state in the US to declare Christmas a legal holiday, and in 1907 Oklahoma became the last US state to declare Christmas a legal holiday.

Yes indeed it is and does, but what harm can it do to add more fun to your festive agenda, and although Christmas is a known time for telling jokes and fooling about you have to be careful not to offend your guests. Always keep the jokes clean and funny more so especially if children are around, listed below are few Xmas jokes:
What do monkeys sing at Xmas - Jungle bells, Jungle bells * Why are Xmas trees bad knitters - Both drop their needles * What did the bald man say when he got a comb for Xmas - Thanks I will never part with it. * What do you get if you coss an apple with a Christmas tree - A pineapple * How long does it take to burn a candle down - A wick * Mum can I have a dog for Christmas - No you can have turkey like everyone else * Who is never hungry at Xmas - The turkey he is always stuffed * What do vampires put on their turkey at Xmas - Grave-y * This turkey is disgusting - Well you asked for a fowl roast.
Games for Christmas:
Grag the gift - Ask your guests to bring a small gift with them, set a budget for this lets say £5. Collect all the gifts number them and let each person choose a number out of a bowl. This is a good way of making sure everybody gets a present at the Christmas party.
Xmas Picture Charades - You will need blank paper and pencils for this game. Give each guest a card with the name of a Xmas carol written on it. Each person has to act out the Christmas carol and let the rest guess what it is.
Pin the Nose on the Reindeer - Draw a picture of a reindeer on a card. Leave an outline on the nose but dont colour it in then separately draw some red noses one for each person playing and attach some sticky tape on the back. Blindfold the player and spin them round twice. Guide them over to where you have placed the pictureand get the blind folded player to place the nose on it. The one who gets it closest is the winner.
Name those Logos - Go through several magazines and cot out adverts (ie leave the 7 up dot but remove the word 7up) paste each on a large card and give everyone an answer sheet and the person who identifies most is the winner.
Name that Xmas Song - Get some xmas cds, play a few lines of a song and the person that guesses the tune first gets a prize and then there is a second prize for guessing the name of the artist. It is ideal to find old songs that way it makes it harder to guess.
Christmas Alphabet - Give each guest a piece of paper that has letters vertically written from A to Z. Your guests must then come up with a word for each letter that relates to Christmas, the first person to complete the list wins.
Time flies when you are having fun, also hunger can interrupt the fun and games even though dinner was filling. To avoid this happening a table at the side of the room with cold foods on. Most ideal for filling the gap are turkey sandwiches, sausage rolls, assorted cold meats, chicken drumsticks, pork pies, crisps, nuts and pickles and to ease on the washing up use dispoasable tableware .
