HINTS FACTS AND TIPS
- Only use hand tied balloons
- Never use ribbon or valves as these are not biodegradeable
- Always attache the ticket by squeezing the knot in the neck of the balloon through the hole at the top of the ticket.
- Never release metallic coil balloons as they are not biodegradeable and also may come into contact with overhead power lines.
- Only use biodegradeable balloons that are made from pure latex which is a natural material made from tree sap - all our balloons are pure latex.
- Never inflate the balloons more than 3 hours prior to the release and if it is a hot sunny day keep them out of the sunlight until you are ready to release them.
- If you are releasing more than 5000 balloons you will need to obtain civil aviation permission.
Normally on release, a balloon can rise to 26000 feet and then it usually becomes brittle in the cold atmosphere and shatters back to earth in tiny pieces that are decomposed by natural gas and microorganisms, thereby starting the biodegrading. However, the ticket comes down whole so this can be found and returned to the organiser.
Sometimes people consider latex balloons are plastic items and therefore associate them with plastic litter, however, this is untrue as latex is not plastic it is organic and made from the sap of rubber trees. It is collected by a method of tapping which ensures the tree is not harmed. Research has shown that latex balloons decompose at a rate equal to or even faster than an oake leaf under the same conditions.
It is always advisable to offer a good prize as this ensures high ticket sales. A local business will often donate a prize in return for publicity, which provides you with a better profit. In many cases local newspapers and radio stations will also give you good publicity and this can help your cause.
The usual price for the sale of tickets is around £1.00 as this is an amount which people can find in a pocket or purse. If the price is too high it can put people off.
