Balloon releases are both colourful and eye catching and always create a festive appearance at your venue as well as raising funds for charitable institutions. It is quite unusual for balloons released correctly to earth intact, studies have shown that balloons usually rise to about 25,000 feet before the cold air freezes them and combined with the pressure at that altitude they fracture into tine pieces that then gradually fall to the ground, the only thing that stays intact is the label. Regardless in what form the balloon lands on the earth it has been shown by research that it decomposes at the same rate if not faster as an oak leaf.

Latex balloons are confused by some people with plastic items and placed in the same category as plastic litter. Latex is not a plastic, it is actually organic made from the sap of rubber trees collected by a harmless tapping process that does not harm the tree. It is a very similar process to that used for making syrup from maple trees. Latex balloons are completely biodegradable the molecular structure begins breaking down when you inflate the balloon and this gathers speed when exposed to sunlight and the atmosphere, once on the ground the gases and microorganisms attack the latex thereby continuing the decomposition process. Foil balloons are never used in releases as they are made from a synthetic metallised plastic nylon material which although it is recyclable is dedefinitely not biodegradable.
