A party popper is an object commonly used at parties, it emits a loud popping noise by means of a small friction actuated explosive charge that is caused by pulling a string. In some party poppers an explosive charge is not used. In party poppers with an explosive charge there is less than 16 milligrams of explosive charge. The streamers normally used in party poppers are non flamable for safe use. The charge or sometimes compressed is used in large party cannons blows out confetti and streamers making a popping sound. Although they are in some cases sold with fireworks, they are not considered as fireworks and are often legal where fireworks are banned. They are also listed as a novelty item or noise maker and are sold all the year round at party stores.

Confetti is a multitude of pieces of paper or metallic material which is usually thrown at celebrations, especially weddings or at large functions after a big win, although it is largely deemed appropiate for any celebration. Confetti is made in a variety of colours, and commercial confetti is available in all different shapes. There is a distinction between confetti and glitter, being that glitter is usually smaller than confetti and is always shiny. Most table confetti is made from glitter so as to show up well and decorate the table in a cheerful way. whilst it is called metallic confetti it is actually metallised pvc. At christmas snow flake confetti is the most popular. Party supply stores usually stock confetti made from paper, pvc and plastic. Confetti is mostly used at parties and weddings but is considered taboo at funerals.

The most basic confetti is simply shredded paper and can be made with a crosscut paper shredder. In recent years the use of confetti has become a normal practice in trophy presentations at sporting events, in these cases larger strips of paper normally measuring 20mm x 60mm in the colours appropiate to the winning team is used. For smaller volumes of confetti ABS or PVC tubes are filled and the confetti is projected via a cannon using compressed air.
